What I’m Reading and Other News July 2023

Hi there reading friend!

It’s warm, but not too warm here. I can hear the family of Jay’s in the garden – their calls sound like little buzz-saws, and the Medlars are growing nicely on the tree. They look ugly, but they are going to be so tasty.

As usual I’m reading a few different things.

New Book: Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea by Rebecca Thorne – Only just started this one, but enjoying it so far! I love books where everything is rubbish and broken down and they fix it up and make friends, and that’s exactly what this is shaping up to be. With books, and tea.

Other New Book: I’m also reading The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers. I’m a huge fan of space books too, and often have one on the go. I read a lot of fantasy books, and then I’ll go through a space phase, now I’m doing both at the same time! I’ve just finished reading a bunch of military sci-fi books, so this is a nice counterpoint to those, as it’s all about the relationships (and not how big the enemy ship was you just blew up).

Re-read: I’m reading Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett with my daughter. Even though she is older we still read together every night and I love revisiting some of my favourite books with her.

Re-read: I’m also re-reading A Wizard’s Guide To Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher. This is for a book club in the Fireside Fantasy facebook group.

I love love love audiobooks, and I’ve just finished The Wandering Inn by Pirateaba, what an ending! I had to get the next one right away haha. In the last couple of weeks I’ve just finished listening to Sacred Cat Island by Harmon Cooper. I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this book. I saw it recommended on the Fireside Fantasy facebook group and got it instantly on the title alone. I didn’t realise it was narrated by Travis Baldree, which was a bonus, and so well done. I loved it so much I know I will listen to it again, the whole book was like a nice hug on a cold day.

I’ve just finised a first rough draft of a 20k word novella that’s a cozy fantasy. I’m possibly putting this one in an anthology – although I have also plotted out a shorter story I might use for that. I’ve also plotted out a full cozy fantasy novel. I’ll get stuck into that once I’m happy with my novella / anthology story. I also write middle grade (under another name) I’m half way through a draft of my fourth novel in one series, and I just finished a stand alone book too, it’s all edited and now I’m putting the final touches to the cover before it’s published.  I’ll have days and weeks of being really creative and writing lots, but neglecting other tasks, and other weeks where I have all the left brain energy going on and I can suddenly deal with taxes, website development, graphics courses and so on, but writing just isn’t happening. I wish I could switch from practical to creative on command, but the brain wants what it wants! Maybe other creatives can relate? I’m also getting excited because I see that BookVault are going to be doing real life physical box sets! That would be great for my middle grade books, and now my mind is buzzing with possibilities for fantasy novels as well.
